Recovery, Conservation, Research, Restauration, Tourism Along The Ioniam Shores Around Syracuse

This proposal concerns some archaeological research in the province of Syracuse, which includes the Neolitical Village of Gisira, the Pantakyas river, the rocky Byzantine sanctuary of Saint Maria Adonai and the Della Bruca Castle (1462). We would very much like to maximise the appreciation of a Sicilian area that is rich in remains which speak of a glorious past. In our civilization all too often based on the effimerous and on images, school has the fundamental role to train people to think critically, decode, appreciate. Thus this project has the ultimate aim to help students discover the great assistance this island can give to European culture, as well as let them find a great variety of activities - research and reading of epigraphs, surveys, restauration work, audio-visual techniques, design, tourism - which could influence their future career. The lack of interest shown by most for works of art and the environment, the selfish attitude that puts in jeopardy the relationship between men and their habitat, has spurred us to action in order to try to eliminate this imbalance. The young must be made aware that they have the duty to respect both their artistic heritage and the environment. We request that work begin very soon on the Della Bruca Castle - especially considering the damage caused to it by the 1990 earthquake - and on the Saint Maria Adonai Sanctuary, which are both in a very poor state.
